Magic Remote gone missing, or the pointer driving you mad? If your LG TV is a smart TV from 2014 or later, it runs webOS, and your iPhone can be its remote over your home Wi-Fi. Simple TV Remote gives you big, clear buttons, typing, inputs and apps. Try it free on your own TV, then unlock it once for $5.99.

What works

webOS is the smart TV system on LG TVs. LG's developer site lists webOS TV 1.x for 2014 models, and a new version every year since.

  • Navigation and OK
  • Volume and mute
  • Keyboard
  • Switch inputs
  • Open apps
  • Turn off
  • Turn on from standbyNeeds "Turn on via Wi-Fi" switched on (under TV On With Mobile, or Mobile TV On on 2015–2019 sets). Works from standby only, not when the TV is unplugged.

Set up

Pairing takes about a minute, once per TV. Each model line’s page has the exact TV menus.

    2014–2018 models

Set LG Connect Apps to On. LG's 2014–2018 user guides list this switch. Newer guides don't, and those sets just show a pairing prompt.

About LG webOS

Since 2022 the version number matches the year: webOS 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. Before that, LG used numbers, from webOS 1.0 (2014) to webOS 6.0 (2021).

Under the webOS Re:New program, LG promises four webOS upgrades over five years. It covers 2023 and later UHD-and-up models, plus 2022 OLED TVs and the 2022 QNED Mini LED 8K (QNED99/95). An upgraded TV gets the newer menus, so the settings path follows your TV's current webOS version.

Phone apps control LG TVs over the local network using LG's second-screen connection. The TV asks you to accept a new app once. Older sets also have an LG Connect Apps switch.
