Got an LG smart TV from 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014 and a remote that's lost, worn out or hard to use? If it runs NetCast, LG's smart TV system from before webOS, your iPhone can be its remote over your home Wi-Fi. The TV shows a 6-digit pairing key, you type it into Simple TV Remote once, and you're set. Check your TV for free in the app, then unlock it once for $5.99.
What works
NetCast was LG's smart TV system before webOS. LG's developer site lists NetCast on LG Smart TVs from 2011 (NetCast 2.0) to 2015 (NetCast 4.5). The home screen is called Home on 2011 and 2012 sets and Smart Home on 2013 and 2014 sets.

Questions
Is there a LG NetCast TV remote app for iPhone?
Yes. Simple TV Remote is a LG NetCast TV remote app for iPhone that works with LG NetCast Smart TV sets running LG NetCast Smart TV. It pairs over your home Wi-Fi and sends real commands in a free check, so you know it works on your exact TV before you pay $5.99, once.
What is NetCast on an LG TV?
NetCast is the smart TV system on LG Smart TVs from 2011 to 2014, before LG moved to webOS. Its home screen is called Home on 2011 and 2012 TVs and Smart Home on 2013 and 2014 TVs. From 2015, LG smart TVs run webOS.
Is there a remote app for an old LG smart TV?
Yes. Simple TV Remote works with LG Smart TVs from 2011 to 2014 that run NetCast. Your iPhone and the TV need to be on the same home Wi-Fi, and you type the TV's pairing key once. The free check shows it working on your own TV before you pay $5.99 once.
Where do I find the pairing key on my LG TV?
It appears on the TV screen when the app connects. Open Simple TV Remote, pick your LG TV, and the TV shows a 6-digit key; type it into your iPhone. If you have more than one LG TV, the key only shows on the one you picked.
What can my iPhone do on a NetCast TV?
The everyday buttons: the arrows and OK, Back, Home, volume and mute, and turning the TV off. You also get play, pause, rewind and fast-forward, the number keys, channel up and down, and the TV's input menu. The free check shows each control on your own TV before you pay.
Can my iPhone turn on an older LG TV?
No. LG's NetCast TVs have no setting that lets a phone turn them on. Press the power button on the TV or use the remote, then your iPhone takes over. It can turn the TV off.
Can I type or open Netflix from my iPhone on a NetCast TV?
Not on these TVs. Typing and opening apps directly aren't available on NetCast. Press Home in the app, then pick the app and the letters on screen with the arrows and OK.
How do I switch to HDMI from my iPhone?
Tap the input button in the app to open the TV's input menu. Then move to the HDMI input you want with the arrows and press OK. You can't jump straight to one HDMI input on these TVs.
Why doesn't my LG TV show a pairing key?
Go to the TV's home screen and try again from the app. Also check that your iPhone and the TV are on the same Wi-Fi, not a guest network, and turn the TV off and on if it still doesn't appear. A few 2011 and 2014 NetCast models don't allow phone control at all, and the free check tells you before you pay.
Is my 2014 LG TV NetCast or webOS?
Most 2014 LG smart TVs run webOS, and those work with Simple TV Remote too. A few 2014 ranges kept NetCast, such as the UK LB570V, LB580V, LB585V, UB800V and UB820V and the US LB5800. If the home screen is a full-screen Smart Home menu rather than a bar of cards along the bottom, it's NetCast.
How do I know if my LG TV runs NetCast or webOS?
Check the model year and the home screen. LG smart TVs from 2011 to 2013 run NetCast, and from 2015 they run webOS. In 2014 most ranges moved to webOS, but some lower ranges such as the UK LB580V and the US LB5800 kept NetCast. A NetCast TV has a full-screen Smart Home menu; webOS shows a bar of cards along the bottom.
Can my phone turn on a NetCast TV?
LG's NetCast manuals have no setting for turning the TV on over the network, and the phone connection ends when the TV turns off.
About LG NetCast
webOS replaced NetCast in 2014 on most ranges. Some lower 2014 ranges stayed on NetCast: LG UK's spec sheets for LB570V, LB580V, LB585V and UB820V list SmartHome, not webOS. From 2015, LG's smart TVs run webOS.
LG's phone remote app for these TVs, LG TV Remote, pairs with a six-digit key shown on the TV screen. None of LG's NetCast manuals has a setting to turn the TV on over the network.
