What works
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer work with Simple TV Remote, and they bring that control to the TV they're plugged into.
- Navigation and OK
- Volume and mute
- KeyboardSome apps, like YouTube, use their own keyboard and ignore typed text.
- Open apps
- Turn off
- Turn on from standbyWakes the streamer from sleep, and the TV with it, only if the streamer is powered from a wall outlet and HDMI-CEC is on in the TV's settings.
On your TV
Turn these on once with your TV remote. Menu names can differ slightly by year and region.
Power the streamer from a wall outlet
If it's powered from the TV's USB port, it switches off with the TV and can't be woken from your phone.
Turn on HDMI-CEC on your TV
CEC is often off by default and has a brand name on many TVs (for example Anynet+ on Samsung or SIMPLINK on LG). If a soundbar or receiver sits between them, turn CEC on there too.
Send volume to the TV over CEC
Choose "Auto (CEC)".
Connect the streamer and your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network
Pair with the code on the TV screen
Open Simple TV Remote, pick the streamer and type the code shown on the TV.
In the app
Pairing takes about a minute, once per TV.
Connect your iPhone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network
Guest networks and Wi-Fi with device isolation block local control.
Open Simple TV Remote and pick your TV
Type the code shown on your TV
The TV shows a short code the first time you connect. After that, the app reconnects without a code.
Let the TV turn on from standby
Look for your TV maker's network standby setting (for example Sony "Remote start" or TCL "Screenless service"). Your TV's page lists the exact menu path.
Can’t find your TV? Add it by IP address
If your TV doesn’t show up in the app, tap “Can’t find it?” and type the TV’s IP address. Here’s where the TV shows it.
Find the TV's IP address (older Android TV menus)
Google documents this menu for Android TV; newer Google TV menus may differ.

Troubleshooting
Most problems come from the network or one TV setting. Start at the top.
The TV doesn't turn on when I wake the streamer
- Turn on HDMI-CEC in the TV's settings. Some TVs turn CEC off again after other settings change.
- Plug the streamer's power adapter into a wall outlet, not the TV's USB port.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
- Unplug the TV, wait 10 minutes and plug it back in.
Volume buttons do nothing
- On the streamer, go to Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons > Volume control and choose "Auto (CEC)".
- Turn on CEC on any soundbar or receiver between the streamer and the TV.
The streamer is missing new features or keeps dropping the connection
- Update it: Settings > System > About > System update.
- Restart it by unplugging the power for 10 seconds, then pair again.
The TV doesn't appear in the app
- Make sure your iPhone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network.
- Allow Local Network access for Simple TV Remote in iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
- Restart the TV: unplug it, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Check that the TV is a Google TV or Android TV. TVs with only Chromecast built-in can't be controlled this way.
No pairing code shows on the TV
- Turn the TV on and leave it on the home screen; the code only shows while the screen is on.
- On the TV, update Android TV Remote Service: open Google Play on the TV, search for "Android TV Remote Service" and choose Update.
- If it still fails, go to Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Android TV Remote Service and choose Force stop, then Clear storage. Then pair again.
The app asks to pair again every time
- Clear the storage of Android TV Remote Service on the TV (Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Android TV Remote Service > Clear storage), restart the TV and pair once more.
- Give the TV a fixed address in your router so it doesn't change after a power cut.
The TV won't turn on from the app
- Wake works only from standby. A TV that was unplugged or switched off at the wall can't be woken over Wi-Fi.
- Turn on your TV maker's network standby setting. See your TV's page for the exact menu path.
- On Android TV 14 sets, a low-power energy mode may turn the network off in standby. Choose a mode that keeps the network on.
- If the TV uses Ethernet, try Wi-Fi, or the other way round. Some TVs only wake on one of them.
Volume doesn't change on a Chromecast, Google TV Streamer or SHIELD
- Turn on HDMI-CEC on your TV and on any soundbar or receiver in between.
- On the streamer, set Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons > Volume control to "Auto (CEC)".
How to use your iPhone as a Chromecast remote
- Power it from the wallPlug the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer into a wall outlet, not the TV's USB port, so it can wake when you open the app.
- Turn on HDMI-CEC on the TVCEC lets the streamer turn the TV on and off and change its volume. It's often off by default and has a brand name, such as Anynet+ on Samsung or SIMPLINK on LG.
- Join the same Wi-FiPut your iPhone on the same home Wi-Fi network as the streamer.
- Type the code from the TVOpen Simple TV Remote, pick the streamer and type the code shown on the TV once.
Questions
Is there a Chromecast remote app for iPhone?
Yes. Simple TV Remote is a Chromecast remote app for iPhone that works with Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer running Google TV. It pairs over your home Wi-Fi and sends real commands in a free check, so you know it works on your exact TV before you pay $5.99, once.
How do I pair a Chromecast with Google TV remote?
Press and hold Back and Home for 3 seconds until the light on the remote pulses. If the TV doesn't show a pairing screen, unplug the Chromecast, wait a few seconds, plug it back in and try again.
How do I reset a Chromecast remote?
Take out both batteries and wait 5 minutes. Hold Home while you put the batteries back, keep holding while the light turns on and stays solid, and let go when it pulses. On a Google TV Streamer remote, hold Mute and the center button until the light turns solid white.
Why is my Chromecast remote not working?
Check the batteries first: take them out and put them back while you watch the light, which should flash twice. If it doesn't, fit 2 fresh AAA batteries. If the light works, pair the remote again with Back and Home.
Why does my Chromecast remote control menus but not TV volume?
Volume and power reach the TV by infrared, which is set up separately. Go to Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons and set up your TV again.
How do I find a lost Google TV Streamer remote?
Briefly press the button on the back of the Google TV Streamer, and the remote plays a sound for 30 seconds. Don't hold the button. You can also start it from the Google Home app under Find my remote.
How do I use a Chromecast without the remote?
Use your iPhone. Google's Google TV app and Google Home app both have a remote, and Simple TV Remote gives you a full remote with a keyboard. From there you can open Settings > Remotes & Accessories and pair a new remote.
Why doesn't my TV turn on when I wake the Chromecast?
Turn on HDMI-CEC in your TV's settings, and power the Chromecast from a wall outlet, not the TV's USB port. If a soundbar sits in between, turn CEC on there too.
Can my iPhone turn on my TV through Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer?
Yes, from standby. Wakes the streamer from sleep, and the TV with it, only if the streamer is powered from a wall outlet and HDMI-CEC is on in the TV's settings. No app can turn on a TV that is unplugged.
My Chromecast is the small round one. Does it work?
Chromecast (1st to 3rd generation) and Chromecast Ultra only receive casts from apps. They don't have Android TV Remote Service, so no remote app can control them.
Do I need a smart TV to use this?
Any TV with an HDMI port works for menus, apps and typing. To turn the TV on and off and change its volume from your phone, the TV needs HDMI-CEC.
Can it switch my TV between HDMI inputs?
Waking the streamer can switch the TV to the streamer's input over HDMI-CEC. Choosing other inputs depends on your TV, so we don't promise it.
About these TVs
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer are Google's own Google TV devices. They include Android TV Remote Service, the same service Google's Google TV app uses for its phone remote.
Because the streamer is what Simple TV Remote talks to, navigation, apps and typing work on any TV with a free HDMI port. Power and volume for the TV itself are passed along over HDMI-CEC.
Google stopped selling Chromecast with Google TV in 2024 when it launched Google TV Streamer. Existing Chromecasts were updated to Android TV 14.
